Method
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
- Once the yeast is activated, add the flour, salt, butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round bun and place them on a greased or lined baking sheet.
- Let the buns rise for an additional 30 minutes. Brush the tops with a little milk for a golden finish.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
For a soft, buttery texture, use melted butter to brush on the buns instead of milk. These buns can also be made in advance and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
