Ingredients

For the Burger Buns
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F (43°C)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 1 tbsp milk for brushing

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
  2. Once the yeast is activated, add the flour, salt, butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round bun and place them on a greased or lined baking sheet.
  6. Let the buns rise for an additional 30 minutes. Brush the tops with a little milk for a golden finish.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a soft, buttery texture, use melted butter to brush on the buns instead of milk. These buns can also be made in advance and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
